Governance
The Anglican Church of Australia is governed nationally under its own Constitution. Elected representatives of the Church, including Bishops, clergy and laity, meet together every three years at the General Synod to discuss matters of mutual concern and to pass new Canons and Rules relating to the order and good government of this Church. The Standing Committee continues the business of the General Synod in the interim, supported through the various Committees, Commissions, Task Forces and Networks.
The leader of the Anglican Church in Australia is known as the Primate who is the President of the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Australia. In between Synods, the Primate is the President of the Standing Committee of the General Synod which is elected by the General Synod to take responsibility for the affairs of the General Synod.
The current Primate is the Archbishop of Adelaide, The Most Reverend Geoffrey Smith. His initial six year term commenced on 7 April 2020.
